The Medicare hospice benefit states that as long as a patient meets the hospice criteria they can receive hospice care. Therefore a hospice patient can receive hospice care for as long as necessary.

Hospice neither hastens nor postpones dying. The aim is to improve the quality of remaining life so patients can enjoy time with family and friends and experience a natural, pain-free death. In most cases, good hospice care can extend life.

Home – The most common setting, where hospice teams provide care in the patient’s residence.
Nursing Home – Hospice services can be provided in long-term care facilities.
Assisted Living Facility – Patients receiving hospice care can remain in their assisted living residence.
Hospital – Some hospitals have hospice units or provide short-term hospice care for symptom management.

Medicare Hospice Benefit – Covers nearly all hospice services for eligible patients.
